Yes, he is the undersized player in the above play so he does need to go low, but by leading with his shoulder and just trying to take out a thigh he is asking for an injury. Maybe he should take a look at Pete Carroll's rugby tackling videos and learn how to tackle like a man.[Correction--forget Carroll's vid; just watch a video of the All - Blacks, Springboks, or any other rugby team and you'll see what good tackling looks like.]
I'm just saying...
What? I Have seen many guys tackle a guy by putting a shoulder into their legs in my three plus decades of watching football. He stopped the guy dead in his tracks. Its not like he was trying to avoid contact.
ReplyDeleteYes and many of those guys jack their shoulders up just like he did. Stopping a guy dead in their tracks means little if you can't line up for the next play.
DeleteYou're and idiot...20 seconds into the video you reference, Carroll said their system emphasizes shoulder tackling, which is exactly what Talib did. Do you actually watch rugby? Rugby players get shoulder injuries, too, but it's not necessarily an indication of improper tackling technique.
ReplyDeletePlayed rugby for 20 years so I'm well aware that ruggers get shoulder injuries. Tackling like that is illegal in rugby. I'll have to watch the vid again to be sure, but this is not what Carroll meant by shoulder tackling.
DeleteTalib kept his shoulders square to the ball, then leaned to his right when the ball carrier ran that direction. Had Talib wrapped up, this would have been a text book tackle. FatMan probably had a few too many when he posted this.
DeleteI wish. Good point, but fact of the matter is he made no attempt to wrap up. Had he the blow would have dissipated over his upper body rather than be focused only on that shoulder--and he would not have hurt himself.
DeleteYou probably shouldn't use that video as a reference - the very first highlight in the opening seconds is exactly what Talib did, only worse because he aimed high...same thing again at 1:30 mark. And many of those rugby highlights are borderline tip tackles.
DeleteSo true. I let my own experience as a rugby player cloud my judgement there.
DeleteLooks like he overran the play and when the ball carrier cut inside had no choice but to throw a shoulder in to him. Had he tried to wrap--and he didn't--he probably wouldn't have been hurt.
ReplyDeleteHe still takes the full impact on that shoulder even if he wraps up. And I don't think he overran the play either - he protected the outside edge and directed the runner back inside where there was help, which is exactly what you're supposed to do.
DeleteYou can't make a text book form tackle on every play, especially when you've got a guy with close to world class speed trying to avoid the hit.
attempt means he missed the tackle .The crowd got hyped with that hit and the Hawks didn't run the ball that way again while he was in. Attempt is not the word He didn't wrap up but he made the tackle
ReplyDeletesorry he did leave the game after that play
