Too Little Too Late for Darrius Heyward-Bey to Make the Pittsburgh Steelers Final Roster?

Former Maryland wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey (DHB) is one of those guys that came out of college with a lot of promise, but going in to his sixth season it has yet to manifest in to production on the field. When he was with the Raiders you could blame the coaching staff and the lack of a quarterback, but in Indianapolis last season he still didn't amount to much.

Getting signed by the Steelers was a good sign for him, but he still has to do something on the field. Thursday night he finally did.

In the Steelers first two preseason games DHB did next to nothing, and with the Steelers expected to hold on to five receivers when they cut down to 53 his chances of making the final roster was looking pretty slim. However, with a decent game against the Eagles Thursday night there could still be hope for him.

DHB caught all three passes thrown his way including a beauty of a touchdown pass from Bruce Gradkowski in the fourth quarter for a touchdown. His total of 54 yards was second on the team to Antonio Bryant who had 59.

A night like this will certainly help his chances of making the final roster, but he is going to need a strong performance in the final preseason game to lock a spot up.  He's an older guy with an unimpressive body of work in the NFL. If he doesn't make the Steelers think they have to keep him they probably will not.

Why not keep one of the younger players that still has promise instead?
