Tony Dungy Can't Believe New Orleans Saints HC Sean Payton Went for the Fake Punt [GIF]

As the second half of the Sunday night game between the Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints went on it appeared as if Drew Brees and the Saints might be able to pull off a comeback. The Dallas offense sputtered on a couple series, the Saints scored on a couple and suddenly a blowout was a two score game.

But time was running out so on fourth and nine with seven minutes left Saints head coach Sean Payton decided to do what everyone in the world--including the Cowboys defensive coordinator--thought he would do.

To call it an ill-advised play with so much time on the clock is an understatement, and it certainly shocked a number of people including former coach turned studio analyst Tony Dungy:

What was Sean Payton thinking with that fake punt. You have Drew Brees. Let him try to win the game--not your PUNTER!

If it was close--like a fourth and two or something--it would not be so shocking, but with nine to go the Saints would have been so much better off hoping their defense could come through instead.

But hey--had it worked Payton would be a genius.
