Pee Wee Team Fined $500 and Coach Suspended After Pick-6 Breaks Mercy Rule [VIDEO]

There is absurd. There is crazy, and than there is freaking nuts. This story about a pee wee team--the Lawrenceville Black Knights in Georgia--being fined $500 for accidentally running up the score is all of the above.

When it comes to pee wee level games many leagues are concerned with one team blowing out and demoralizing another. The idea is for kids to play and what 8-year old is going to be encouraged to play if he gets spanked really bad in a game? Some will not care, but many will.

Like many little leagues, the one the Black Knights play in instituted a mercy rule with the mark being 33 points. Not unusual, but what is unusual is the penalty. Run up the score more than 33 points and your team is fined $500 and your head coach suspended a week.

So when Elijah Burrell of the Black Knights intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown with the team already up 32-0 they broke the rule. The team has now been hit with a fine and the coach suspended.

This is beyond ridiculous. The rule is not a bad one, but do they really expect a kid that has a chance to score his first touchdown not to do so? Is that how they want to teach the game?

If they have to penalize the team there has to be a better way to do it than to cost them more money and suspend what is probably a volunteer coach.

Who is going to want to play in a league or coach in one where this can happen? If there is another option probably no one.

  1. Don't keep score! Then the kids can enjoy the feeling of scoring a touchdown every time. Winning and losing shouldn't matter until middle school.
