San Francisco 49ers May Be Adding Marcus Lattimore to the Running Back Mix Soon

When San Francisco 49ers running back Marcus Lattimore takes his first snap as a professional it will be the end of a long, hard journey back to the gridiron. A Heisman candidate back in college, injuries suffered while playing for South Carolina have held him back, but the trip back to healthy appears to be nearing its end.

That means fans may soon see him take the football field for the first time since 2012.

Lattimore is due to come off the non-football injury list after Monday night's game against the St. Louis Rams. From the sound of things it would not be shocking to see him get some action right away.

Not only is he in the best shape of his life, but he's had plenty of time to learn the system too (via GoGamecocks).
“It has benefitted Marcus tremendously because he has learned so much before being put out there,” Vernon Smith, his stepfather, said. “He knows all the plays. He knows all the protections. He understands the game at a mental level that most rookies don’t.”

Putting them in to practice and knowing them are two different things of course, but the 49ers training staff and coaches are not dumb. As long as the team has waited to see what Lattimore has to offer they will probably ease him in to action.
