Texans QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is Not Who We Thought He Was Going to Be

When the Houston Texans signed journeyman quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick fans of the team everywhere let out a collective groan. With the exception of one really good season in Buffalo he--well, he wasn't that good. He was good enough to be a back-up maybe, but if he was your starting quarterback you better have a solid defense and a good running game.

Opinions were pretty low of the bearded Ivy League graduate, and while he has not done a lot to make them better he really hasn't been that bad.

Going in to this season Houston fans knew they would have to rely on defense, special teams, and the running game. As far as Fitzpatrick was concerned they just wanted him to not lose the game. Against Washington, Buffalo, and Oakland that philosophy worked just fine.

Even in the losses it's not fair to pin too much of the fault on him. Of course as the quarterback it is his responsibility to get the offense moving so in that respect he does. However, whoever is calling the plays deserves just as much of the blame.

Not too many of his interceptions have cost the team points. Of the three he threw against the Giants only one resulted in points (7). The one against Dallas did not result in points, but the one against Pittsburgh did.

While he didn't throw a pick against Indianapolis his fumble towards the end of the game cost them a chance to tie the game up, but to be fair there wasn't much time life and a whole lot of field to cover.

All in all Fitzpatrick has not been that bad. He has tried to be what the Texans brought him in for, a game manager. He hasn't been a perfect one by far, but he certainly hasn't been as bad as we thought he would be.

Does this mean fans should be happy with him and glad he's in Houston? Heck no! They should be glad things are not that bad in spite of Fitzpatrick.

  1. What do we have to lose by trying one of the other quarterbacks? We've lost every game thus far with the quarterback we have used in every game. Give someone else a chance to make a difference. Do it for the fans and for the team.

  2. My only guess is that for some reason they are not sure the other two will do a better job and they don't want to get in to a QB mess (more so than it already is) during the middle of the season.

  3. I think the Texans are hoping they can still win in spite of Trent Dilfer-ing at QB.

  4. As I see the problem with the Texans and it is not with the Quarterback. We have issues with blocking on the offensive, tight end, and offensive line, and a big threat at receiving......we have major issue with the linebacker crew and defensive safety....now on to special teams we block good enough there but we do not have a good return guy that can consistently bring back the ball 10 to 20 yards..no threat to run the ball all the way for a touchdown so the other teams fire off and run the length of the field to tackle the runner with the ball... we have to upgrade those positions asap...we need to put Cushing on IR for the rest of the year... we need to get the linebacking crew fixed with new faces..the QB is fine and he is consistant.. but we need to fix the problems that are obvious quickly...

    1. WTF? The offensive line must be doing something right for AF to be the second leading rusher in the league and the problem with the receiving corp is the lack of consistent play at QB. Hopkins and Johnson are two of the best the NFL has to offer right now (as for the rest....). What do you think teams normally do when it comes to special teams coverage? Hang back and wait for the ball carrier to come to them? No! They already do exactly what you said regardless of who the return man is. Dude--do you know football or are you just trying to say the opposite of what the issues actually are with the team or are you just on crack?

  5. The QB is the main problem. He is OK as backup. We need to let one of the other QBs have an opportunity to salvage the rest of the season. Ryan knows the playbook ---- that is my choice. We still have a chance to make the playoffs. Cushing needs to get his passion and relentless determination back to form.

  6. The scouts and coaches get paid for a reason. We as fans only see a slight spectrum , while Fitz isn't a super bowl qb, it's safe to bet he's the better choice than the other two. Billy O'Brian wants and has to win games now, every person all the way to the ball boys are concerned about keeping there job . Who else is available , it's a slim market for a superstar qb's right now. At least we will Watt for the next several years, I think Clowney will go the way of JaMarcus Russel.
