Buffalo Bills Now a Running Back Away From Relevance?

The team had hoped E.J, Manuel was going to be the quarterback of the future, but it now appears that title belongs to Kyle Orton. Sammy Watkins has become everything the team hoped for when they took him with the fourth pick of the draft. The defense has turned in to one of the best in the league (No. 6 overall; 7th against the pass and 8th against the run).

After years of being a so-so to bad team the Bills finally appear poised to become competitive in the AFC East. There is just one problem.

They need a running back they can rely on.

Most teams go with a running back by committee approach now, but most still have one back that is their main guy. That is not the case with the Bills. Between injuries and ineffectiveness the team has struggled to crack 100 yards a game this season (good for 20th in the league).

No one has more than 70 carries, No one has cracked 300 yards. No one that has scored a rushing touchdown is expected to play anytime soon (Spiller, Manuel, and fullback Frank Summers).

Not good.

C.J. Spiller was lost to injury (could return in Week 16 I think). Fred Jackson has struggle with his health. Anthony Dixon has yet to impress and Bryce Brown certainly did not last week especially when he fumbled what would have been the first rushing touchdown of the season against Kansas City in to the end zone and out the back for a turnover and a touchback.

There are some interesting running backs coming out of college this season. Whether they will be available when it's Buffalo's turn, but should the opportunity arise (via trade, deal with the devil, etc) to pick up someone like Melvin Gordon it would not be shocking to see them do it.
