Terrance West Could Get More Time in the Cleveland Browns Backfield But Not Because of His Running

The surprise of the 2014 NFL season has without a doubt been the Cleveland Browns. At the midway point of the season the team is 5-3 and starting to become part of serious playoff talks. Brian Hoyer has taken a hold of the QB job, the defense is playing well, and the wide receivers have been just fine without that Josh Gordon guy.

There has been one problem though--the running game. No one seems to want to own the job essentially forcing the Browns to use multiple players until someone steps up to take the job.

Going in to Thursday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals it sounds as if the team is planning on giving rookie Terrance West a serious look, but not so much because of his success running the ball.

More so for the little things he's been doing--like pass blocking. His block on Bucs linebacker Lavonte David gave Hoyer the time and space he needed to find Taylor Gabriel for the go-ahead touchdown.

Getting put on the inactive list for the Steelers game in Week Six served as somewhat of a wake up call for West. Since then he has buckled down, worked as hard as he could, and acted more like a team player; someone his teammates and coaches can trust to get the job done.

“Taking care of the small things,” West said. “You control everything.”

Blocks like the one he laid on David are important--and Hoyer would likely agree, but if the team is going to have a chance to win the AFC North they are going to need to get some actual production from whoever lines up in the backfield.

  1. Thats a great block but the Browns are fortunate that Thomas didn't get hurt on that play.
