PHOTO: Baltimore Ravens WR Torrey Smith Becomes First Athlete to Wear T-Shirt That Sends the Right Message

Ever since the deaths in Ferguson and New York sparked all kinds of protests around the country we have since athletes at all levels wearing 'I Can't Breathe' t-shirts as a form of protests. Commenting on them one way or the other will just result in people getting mad and filling my comment section with all sorts of nastiness (seen in on other sites) so I haven't bothered.

However, the message that Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith wore during his time in front of the press Sunday is one I can get behind.

  1. I have been a big fan of his for several years now. This just further proves what a tremendous young man he is. he continues to defy both odds and stereotypes. I hope that he and the Ravens can come to terms, but if not, he is a bright spot who will improve things wherever he lands.

    1. AMEN!!!!! THE RIGHT MESSAGE! ALL LIVES MATTER!

    2. There's a reason the hashtag and movement is "Blacklivesmatter." Because the people being disproportionately victimized by police violence are Black. It is the DISCREPANCY between the way White people vs. Black people are treated by our so-called justice system that is the entire freaking point! White people who have contentious interactions with police don't end up dead. Black people do. We have studies and data showing these trends even with all other things being equal. The divide is racial, and that's what needs to change. Black lives need to be treated with the same respect that White lives are given by our Law Enforcement. Saying "All Lives Matter" willfully ignores the discrepancy and pretends that somehow White people are treated just as bad. They're not. That's the point. F that noise and this guy's ridiculous shirt.

I'm not saying there aren't dick cops out there, and some who rightfully belong in jail - but to suggest cops only wrongfully kill black people is ignorant at best. Sadly, when an unarmed white person (or Hispanic) is wrongfully killed at the hands of police, there's hardly a peep.
Autumn, white woman, killed in her yard in front of her husband and young son by a black cop, as he was trying to shoot the family dog.
Nothing happened to him, tapes not released, nothing.
But because she was white, it didn't count, right?

    10. Honestly I think you just need to open your eyes. You mean to tell me that a boy playing with a toy gun in an open carry stated was not wrongfully shot? There is evidence that black people are killed by law enforcement 200% more. And I'm very aware of this story. The dog was trying to attack the officer he was protecting himself he mistakenly shot the woman. This case is not comparable mostly because he followed protocol unlike the white officers that have blatantly pointed their guns at black citizens and opened fire. Nice try though. And furthermore there are such thing as black Hispanics.

      Delete
    11. so it ISN'T okay to mistake a toy gun for a real one with only a split-second's timing with which to make a decision, but it IS okay to completely hit the wrong target? oh of course, because it was a white woman ....

    12. Your BLM movement is funded by George Soros whose mission it is to create a divide in this country making it easier to bring it to it's knees so that she can be overran and conquered. Don't let yourself be controlled like a puppet.

  5. Guys guys guys! Of course all lives matter- the black lives matter is not a campaign against any but one to uplift those who've been institutionally oppressed. We can't address all the issues at once - focus is necessary. And there is an specific agenda against those with darker skin tones written into our government . We already know the other lives matter and treat them as such much more often than "black" lives. So we gotta make it known that their lives matter too. That shouldn't even need said. By focusing on the lives that are treated like they don't matter and taking care of them we actually bring into reality that "right goal" of all lives mattering. All the parts of the car are important. But only the broken one needs fixed - get it ? CMON now we are in this together and need each other to fix the imbalances. If you turn up the volume Everything gets loader. If you adjust the mix individually though you get a harmonious balanced sound. Ya feel me????????

    3. Hey JJ, Might look at the background behind black lives matter--http://www.redstate.com/2015/11/13/anti-american-left-funds-blacklivesmatter-now/ ...There has always been a suspicion that #BlackLivesMatter was an astro-turf group. The three people most closely associated with leadership roles in #BlackLivesMatter, Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza, and Opal Tometi, are established radicals who haven’t held a job. Ever. The link to Soros and now to Democracy Alliance indicates that the anti-American progressives who rule the Democrat party have decided that it is to their advantage to ensure that #BlackLivesMatter is able to continue along its current trajectory.

This is not all that surprising. Progressives have long held the conceit that if there is enough civil disorder that America will turn to Democrats for leadership. Was it a coincidence that the Occupy Wall Street nonsense started during the primary season for the 2012 elections? Or that Obama allied himself with them? Hardly.

    5. To see the racism written in law, all you have to do is look up the mandatory minimum sentences for drugs. Also, even though whites use drugs at the same rate as other races, you won't see them being arrested as much as the minorities. http://www.drugpolicy.org/race-and-drug-war

    6. Try linking to something that is mot biased if you actually want to ptove your point. So there is institutional racism because crack sentences differ from cocaine? That is easily the dumbest thing i have ever heard.

    7. “Based on The Guardian’s statistics, police killed more white people than any other race this year. A total 385 white people have been killed by police this year, and 66 of them were unarmed at the time of their death.

However, activists like the members of the Black Lives Matter movement argue that police kill blacks at a rate disproportionate to their total percentage of the population — an assertion supported by The Guardian’s statistics. Police killed almost five black people per every million black residents of the U.S., compared with about 2 per million for both white and hispanic victims."

      from http://www.mintpressnews.com/776-people-killed-by-police-so-far-in-2015-161-of-them-unarmed/209127/ .

The US census says the black population is only 14% of the United States’ population.

The population clock says there are almost 323 million people in the US.

      14% of 323,000,000 is 45,220,000.

So five per million would be 225 blacks killed by cop in 2015.

The US census says white people are 77% of the US population.

      77% of 323,000,000 is 248,710.000.

So two per million would be 496 white people killed by cop in 2015.

So killed by cop in 2015
      225 blacks
      496 whites

Tell me again which lives matter?

How are they institutionally oppressed? Your argument is not valid in the least. Smith is right--ALL LIVES MATTER. Not just black lives.

  7. White people don't have affirmative action (Im Spanish, Cuban American). So when Jj says that black people are institutionally oppressed I disagree. Black Americans have many college grants and benefits in order to get them selves out of the social imbalances that their poor communities create. As a Cuban American I was born in a ghetto city where if you looked at someone the wrong way you should be prepared to throw down. I joined the marine corps, picked a good job as an aviation electrician and now work for General Electric. I have a black american friend who did the same job as me and he chose to go work for home depot. Choices people make have nothing to do with institutional oppression. If anything it self inflicted oppression.

  12. Well said Ricardo. I'm Puerto Rican American. I didn't grow up in the ghetto. My father worked his "ASS" off to get us out when I was 6. I have 3 brothers & 4 sisters plus two adopted sisters from foster care. So obviously my mom stayed home to take care of us. My parents also put us through catholic school. My dad was always working. I called him a workaholic. But he did what he had to do to make life better for us. You choose how hard you want to work for what you want in life. So if you choose a job with less work you get a paycheck with less money and therefore you have less things. Duh! I don't believe that blacks don't have opportunities. You have to find them like the rest of us. It took me months to find a scholarship for my son for college but I found it and he got a full ride bc he worked hard in school and deserved it (3.6 gpa). It's called the Board of Governors Scholarship and it's for minority's, in case anyone is interested and a did the work for you. Your welcome❣

    3. YES THEY ARE!! White people are also killed by cops, but...as with blacks....these white people are usually thugs. It just isn't exciting for the press to report on white deaths because it doesn't result in beatings, riots, wholesale looting and destruction. That's what the media wants to broadcast.

    4. Please ... if black lives mattered so much to blacks, they wouldn't be killing each other everyday at an alarming rate!!! Also, Statics have also shown, whites have been killed by police more than blacks. BLM is based on lies (thug lies) while innocent black lives do not matter to the democrats, AL Sharpton, Jessie Jackson or thugs. It's not racism when the facts show otherwise. All Black lives should matter ..but not to those that kill them apparently, by other blacks.

      Delete
    5. To Unknown's comment, that is pure BS! Those of us who think all lives matter are less racist than those who support the BLM movement, which in my opinion is nothing more than a black KKK. They hate whites who "oppress" them. The only people I have ever oppressed were my children as teenagers who thought they knew everything and thought they could do whatever they wanted; hell yeah, I oppressed them and guess what, they are now decent, respectful, hard-working adults who are raising their children properly. The people who feel oppressed are oppressing themselves by sitting around complaining about their "treatment". Get off your butt, clean up your neighborhoods, raise your children properly and preach to them to get all the education they can so they can change the outcome of their lives!

  14. The sad moment you realize these white people don't even know they are racist and these Spanish are so eager to be white they'll agree with them. You know nothing about black people your either too scared or unwilling to hear their side which makes you a closet racist. Hiding behind the American flag doesn't make you any less racist .Trying to wear all lives Matters shirts will only allow him to be accepted in the white community which the House Slaves loved to do. I would rather be oppressed than to sell out my culture to be accepted by whites.

    1. Lol how do you know he's from the ghetto? Every person that supports BLM isn't from the ghetto. I'm a teacher, I'm black, I've never lived in the ghetto, I work hard (2 jobs since we're underpaid and all), and my favorite genre of music is alternative. And no we don't need white people (although its nice to have white allies), most times their motives aren't genuine anyway. Where do you get your perception of black people? From the few you see on TV?

    2. And, Shannon, where do you get YOUR perception of white people? "Most times their motives aren't genuine anyway." Really? I didn't know you could see into the heart and soul of a person. I thought only God could do that. I think you just revealed what appears to be your own anti-white prejudice. Sounds like you need to remove that plank from your own eye ...

      Delete
    3. Idk? From the countless number of white people that I've encountered that weren't genuine? But hey... At least you're not oppressed because of my so called "prejudice". One only 1/4 through with my life maybe I'll meet more of better character.

TO be able to see the value in others of any race other than thug black lives. Those who are criminals don't see the value in anyone but themselves apparently! They think it's OK to steal, loot, kill, burn down others businesses & destroy the livelihoods of others. We ALL MATTER in this world, we all deserve to live a decent life, but...if you chose to live a life of crime & destruction, that's the choice you make, don't be surprised being devalued or arrested, but that's the choice criminals make of any color!!

While that's fine all lives matter I must interject here, there has been a terrible and tragic injustice going on in our country where black lives are being extinguished without a trace of humanity stepping in to stop it, so the Black Lives Matter movement is an important one. Black Lives Matter is a message stating that Black lives are being taken, and they are in the most brutal way, not white lives, not red lives, not yellow lives, Black lives, and so we must not take away from this movement by dejection it into some other message. If all lives matter why are black lives being taken with no consequence to the murderers who take them?! BLACK LIVES MATTER and we cannot stop until racism and murder is wipe out!!!
