Dallas Cowboys Were Nearly Named the 'Dallas Steers'

Most folks know the story behind how the Washington Redskins got their name next to the never ending controversy surrounding the name. Have you ever wondered how some of your favorite teams got their name? For example, why did the Dallas Cowboys go with the name 'Cowboys.' as it turns out, that was not the name Tex Schramm was going to go with at first.

The team was almost the Dallas Steers.

The team actually started out as the Dallas Steers, but when Schramm realized one of the obvious jokes that opposing fans would use--how they were going to castrate the Steers--he decided that had to be changed.

The first contracts the team drew up had the name Dallas Rangers, which happened to be the name of the minor league baseball team that was supposed to be moving, printed on them.

After they had guys sign they ended up drawing a line through Rangers and wrote in Cowboys, their third option.
