Frank Gore May Be Disappointed in the Commitment the 49ers Are Willing to Give

Over the next few weeks leading up to the official start of free agency NFL fans will be faced with the stark reality that their team is not going to bring back one of their longtime favorite players. Some have already been told they are not coming back and more will likely get the news as free agency draws near.

One such player could very well be longtime San Francisco 49ers running back Frank Gore.

Gore is scheduled to become a free agent for the first time in his career which has been spent entirely with the 49ers. Right now it is hard to say if he will be back. Carlos Hyde did well when given the chance last season, and the team could look to feature him going forward. Tack on his age and contract demands and he may not be an attractive option to the 49ers anymore.

By time the next season starts Gore is going to be 32, old for an NFL running back. When a running back hits 30 their skills typically decline, but it is hard to say that has happened with Gore. In 2012 he averaged 4.7 yards a carry, but saw that number dip to 4.1 in 2013. Last year, however, he averaged 4.3.

So if he improved he can't be in decline just yet. The question going forward is whether he will be able to keep improving or not. Last season he only rushed for 100+ yards on the ground four times and seven times he was held under 50. Part of the issue could very well be the offensive play calling, but it certainly isn't the whole issue.

Gore has to take some of the fault their. Going forward he has said he wants to play on a Super Bowl contender and that he wants a commitment from his team going forward. While he is one of the best backs of the last decade teams will not get that guy anymore, What they are going to get is a guy that has carried the ball 2442 times over the last decade.

He's old. He's battered. He is not the kind of guy you sign to more than a couple years anymore and definitely not for a lot of money. Especially when you already have a big, young running back on the roster like Carlos Hyde.

Good luck Frank, but you are probably not going to get what you want.
