As you can see in the video he was not trying to dislodge the ball and can't even make the argument. He simply pounded him in the face.
He was ejected and afterwards did pretty much the only thing he could do afterwards and apologized:

Sounds pretty sincere to me, but for some reason his tweets tell some people that his actions were intentional and not heat of the moment:
The second view of Gibbs' play is even worse. His tweets make it clear it was an intentional punch. Penalty will and should be severe.

Yeah, there is no excuse for what he did, but I don't see how anything can be read in to his tweets other than he's sorry for what he did. Villanova went on to win the game 80-54.
