Green Bay Packers Say Goodbye to A.J. Hawk

This time of year just sucks. Due to salary cap constraints teams are forced to say goodbye to longtime contributors and fan favorites. In some cases the players is just not that good anymore, but in other cases his salary is just way too high and the team needs the cap space.

When the Green Bay Packers let go of longtime linebacker A.J. Hawk Wednesday the reason was likely a little bit of both, performance and salary cap.

Hawk is coming off of ankle surgery and will officially carry a failed physical designation with him. In the latter half of the season he did seem to be a bit slower than usual and often had to take deeper angles in order to make a play on someone. At the time no injury was ever reported but several teammates speculated that he was dealing with some kind of ailment.

The team also saves $3.5 million in cap space which they will need in order to resign wide receiver Randall Cobb.

Hawk is a good linebacker and will find a home with someone in time for training camp as soon as he is able to pass the physical.
