Is Reggie Bush a Bust?

When Reggie Bush was made the second pick in the draft by the New Orleans Saints the world thought the Houston Texans were crazy for passing up on the exciting and talented offensive threat. He never quite materialized in to the weapon that he was at USC for the Saints, Miami didn't have much luck with him either, neither did Detroit.

With him turning 30 before next season it is probably safe to say he never will, but now that Detroit has let him go you have to wonder if he will get another shot.

At his age and following a season where he was often injured and with a market that is going to be full of running back talent it will be interesting to see if he gets picked up by anyone even as a role player. In the past he was a good receiving threat out of the backfield, but last season he only managed 253 yards on 40 receptions. He has never been a big guy so short yardage is out too. His ability to make people miss is not what it used to making it unlikely he will be tabbed to be someone's third-down back either.

Should this be the end for him you have to wonder what his legacy is going to be. After the show he put on in college the expectations were pretty high for him, but after nine seasons he has only rushed for 5465 yards (only twice did he reach the 1000 yard benchmark). Could it be that the former Heisman winner is a bust?

On one hand you can say yes. Big things are expected from players that are drafted as high as he was, and he has never been half the threat anyone thought he was going to be coming out of college. So in that regard yes. However, he did last nine seasons in the NFL. You can't suck and do that.

Maybe calling him a bust is a little harsh. That would put him in the same company as Jamarcus Russell who is definitely a bust. Disappointment might be a little more accurate (but still harsh).
