Peyton Manning May Want to Hold Off On Cutting the Broncos Any Kind of Salary Cap Breaks

Word is that Peyton Manning wants to play again next season and that the Denver Broncos want him back. of course they do! He is Peyton freaking Manning! So what if he looked mortal towards the end of the season! He was not healthy. He is still one of the best to play the game and you do not turn him away if you can help.

The Broncos may not be able to help it though. They need salary cap room and they are hoping that Peyton will help them create some since he currently counts $19 million towards the cap.

So he should give it to them right? Help the team improve so he can have a better shot at winning one more Super Bowl before his body breaks for good. The question, however, is whether the team is going to do what he needs in order to be in a better position for him to make magic happen or if they are going to let one or more of his targets leave as free agents.

The team has already sworn that it will not let Demaryius Thomas escape via free agency and will franchise tag him if need be. That leaves one of his other favorite targets, tight end Julius Thomas.

Word is that Thomas turned down a 5-year, $40 million because he didn't like how it was structured. He has made it no secret that he wants to get paid in the Jimmy Graham range ( $10 million/season), but the Broncos have appeared reluctant to do so after his drop in production last season and his injury history. Rumor has it though that Peyton is considering  restructuring his contract so they can do just that.

Stop Peyton. Don't do it.

Losing a good target sucks, but this is one they can afford to let go. Thomas does not really fit in to a Gary Kubiak offense and would probably play an even smaller role next season as he did last season. The emergence of Emmanuel Sanders made up for the drop in production from Thomas.

Having a big target like Thomas is nice, but the Broncos could replace him with Minnesota tight end Maxx Williams in the draft.

So don't restructure your deal so the team can sign Thomas, Let him go and keep your money Peyton.

  1. He is one of the best TEs in football. A TD monster. I wouldn't replace him for a rookie unless the rookie was setting NCAA records and looked phenominal. Then if they whiff on him in the draft, they are in real trouble.
