You kind of have to wonder if it is confidence in their current QB or a lack of confidence in Marcus Mariota.

However, as impressive as his college credentials are success on Saturdays does not always translate to success on Sundays. Many critics believe that Mariota's success was as much a product of the system as his talents. They don't see him being able to take the ball from under center, drop back, and still have his eyes down field tracking his receivers.
Many compare him to San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick--which can be both good and bad. He has the speed and acceleration like Kaepernick to be a true dual threat quarterback, but at the same time it can be feast or famine.
Both tend to need time to warm up and find their groove, In college that is a lot easier to cover for than in the NFL as the 49ers discovered last season.
So while the public face of the Titans is calling it confidence in Mettenberger it may very well be a lack of confidence in the so-called best available option, Mariota.
