Exactly what kind of numbers we are talking about here is not known, but the key thing for many players these days in negotiations is the guaranteed amount. Yes, it is nice to throw in a lot of incentives that give you the chance to make more, but considering how his career has gone so far the guarantee is likely key for Fairley.
The Lions declined to pick up his option because of some off-field issues, weight problems, injuries, and a lack of production. So unless the market for Fairley is low and the Colts are not going to be guaranteeing much they are going to be overpaying for him not too unlike how they overpaid for Trent Richardson.
