New York Giants Losing Patience With Tom Coughlin?

When his time is done and over with New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin will be remembered well. Since taking over the team in 2004 he has led the Giants to the playoffs five times and to the Super Bowl twice--both wins. However, it's been three seasons since his team has been to the post season and they really haven't looked very good the last couple years.

The Giants signed him to a one-year extension anyway, but the fact that it was just one year may be kind of telling as to how the team feels about him.

His contract was not a concern for Coughlin thanks to the Giants policy of not letting a head coach go in to a lame duck year (the final year) of his contract. But they only signed him to a one-year extension just like they had the season before.

That doesn't exactly speak well for how a team perceives a coach's future with the team. Yes, he has done great things for the team over the years but there comes a time when every coach's time has run its course.

There are enough rumors going around about his job status that some are wondering if that is why the Giants have not been real active in free agency:

Coughlin is a rarity in the NFL having held his job for over a decade, but three sub-par seasons followed up by another may be too much for the front office. Should the head coach change that could mean a change of schemes and a number of guys being cut because they don't fit the new one.

Who wants to sign with a team they don't feel too secure with? No one.

  1. With his advanced age, did you ever consider that a one year extension is all Tom has asked for?
