Signing Vince Wilfork is the Best Thing Houston Can Do For Louis Nix III

Sunday night the Houston Texans hosted free agent defensive tackle Vince Wilfork. The team has been rumored to be a front runner for the big man's services in large part because of his familiarity with the coaching staff having played for Bill O'Brien and Rome Crennel and played with linebackers coach Mike Vrabel. It doesn't hurt that his agent lives in Houston either.

However, what will this mean for the big man they already have on the roster, Lois Nix III? It would actually be the best thing that could happen to Nix at this stage of his career.

Nix was a steal for the Texans in the draft last year. While most analysts had him rated as a first round pick he ended up falling to the third which is where Houston snatched him up. An injury forced him on to the IR though so he has yet to actually play.

So--how is signing Wilfork the best thing that can happen to him?

Easy--because he will get the chance to learn the game from one of the best big men in the business. Coaches are great and they can teach you a lot of things, but there is something to be said for having a player that can get in the game as well and will know exactly what you are talking about.

Nix may be looked upon to do more than he is ready for without Wilfork. With him the team can work Nix in to the lineup without having to throw him to the wolves.

There are a handful of other teams that are also supposedly interested in Wilfork. Frank Gore and Andre Johnson have made it no secret they want their former Miami Hurricanes teammate to join them in Indianapolis. The New England Patriots are not out of the picture yet either.
