San Francisco 49ers Fan Group Wants the Team to Be Fan-Owned Like the Green Bay Packers

It has not been a banner off-season for the San Francisco 49ers. The team got rid of a head coach that had turned the club in to a perennial Super Bowl contender. Two linebackers retired, the franchise's leading rusher left via free agency, rumors circulated that the team may be shopping its star quarterback, and one player was arrested for spousal abuse.

It hasn't been a good few months and some fans are tired of it. So tired of it in fact that they are trying to make a push for the team to become like the Green Bay Packers--community owned.

The fan group really wants to get rid of the current ownership and wants to push/encourage York to sell the club. They don't want him to sell it to another filthy rich person, but to fans:
"We will push Jed York to register the 49ers as a non-profit and set a date for an initial public offering of 49ers ownership stock, with no single shareholder allowed more than 5% of outstanding shares."
The NFL currently does not allow this to happen so the group is hoping the league will help them out a little.

To achieve this end the fan group plans on buying a whole bunch of billboards around the city encouraging York to sell. To fund these billboards they have started a Kickstarter campaign for fans to donate to.

They have set an ambitious goal of $89,000 which has to be raised in it's entirety for the group to have access to any of the funds. As of 3/25 there have been 43 backers that have donated $2052. They have 47 more days to raise the rest.

$89,000? Really? Did these guys actually think they were going to get that much public support or was the point to draw attention to their dissatisfaction by just starting the campaign?
