Former Longhorns Head Coach Mack Brown in Dubai to Talk Texas Football

Mack Brown may be gone from the sideline for the Texas Longhorns, but he is far from forgotten. He has a day job with ESPN, but also has one as the special assistant to the University president (and earns a tidy salary of $500K/year for it). As it turns out, the position actually does entail him doing some work.

Brown is currently in Dubai and trying to set the stage for the Longhorns to play a football game sometime in the near to distance future in the Middle East.

Ever since he took over athletic director Steve Patterson has talked about doing whatever he can to expand the university's brand, especially internationally. The basketball team is going to open next season in Japan. Mexico City has been talked about as a possible location for a football game, but it doesn't sound like there was much support for the idea.

Last fall Patterson talked about trying to get a game over in the Middle East:
"We have a lot of folks in the oil and gas industry," Patterson said. "Houston is the center of the world in terms of the gas industry. A lot of those alums spend time in the Middle East, and Dubai is a place that wants to use sports to help put itself on the map. So we'll have some conversations, and we'll see where they lead."
It appears that the school is now working on pursuing the idea. With Dubai interested in expanding its brand bringing in a college football game from the United States would go a long way towards doing just that.

Should it come to fruition it would not be the first time a team has played a game outside of the United States. Notre Dame and Navy opened the 2012 season in Dublin. Last season Penn State and UCF also played in Dublin. Central Michigan and Eastern Kentucky played in the Bahamas last season as well.

So it is possible.
