The idea behind the spring game is to give the fans something to see and hold them over till the fall season starts. It also gives the coaches a chance to see how well everyone has progressed during spring workouts by putting them in "game" situations. It's more of a glorified practice than a game, but what are you going to do at this time of year?
A lot of teams had their spring games over the weekend including Northwestern. In an effort to make the game as real as possible the team brought in actual referees, but they seem to forget that the game is supposed to be fun. They called the following celebration excessive and threw a flag on it:
