Baker Mayfield Expected to be Named Oklahoma Sooners Starting Quarterback

During the 2013 season the quarterback position was in flux for the Oklahoma Sooners. At times it looked like Blake Bell was going to be the answer, but when Trevor Knight led the team to an upset win over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl (and threw for 348 yards and four touchdowns) it appeared that the QB of the future was found.

Last season did not go well for Knight and it appears that the team is ready to move on to Texas Tech-transfer Baker Mayfield.

The Sooners have not announced the change and are not expected to till fall, but Tulsaworld is reporting that Baker Mayfield is going to be named the starting quarterback. The article does not refer to an inside source or any sort of tangible proof that Knight is out. Just that the general perception during Spring Practice was that Knight is already being looked upon as the back-up.

Assuming the move does happen no one is going to be surprised, While Knight is capable of great things once handed the reins last season he proved to be too inconsistent. He would have been replaced last season, but the team did not have a better option since Mayfield was sitting out due to transfer rules.

Mayfield was a walk-on at Texas Tech and appeared to be the next great Kliff Kingsbury quarterback. He exploded on to the college football scene with a 400+ yard, four touchdown performance in his debut game against SMU. He followed that up with a 300+ yard game against Stephen F. Austin. He missed some time due to injury, but when all was said and done he threw for 2315 yards and 12 touchdowns in eight games.

Something happened between Mayfield, the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year in 2013, and Kingsbury resulting in Mayfield transferring to Oklahoma.
