Don't Expect to See Eric Weddle Working Out With the Team Anytime Soon

San Diego Chargers safety Eric Weddle is one of the better and definitely one of the hardest hitting defensive backs in the league. For the last few years the Chargers have been paying him accordingly, but this year he goes in to the final year of his 5-year, $40 million contract he is having an issue. He wants to feel secure in his job beyond this season.

He wants a new contract. Until he gets it he will not be showing up at off-season workouts.

While the holdout is understandable it will probably not end how Weddle wants it to. While there is no reason to think that he is going to decline anytime soon he is getting older. As player's age more often than not they do tend to slip. It's only natural. You get older, your body requires more time to heal and recover, and it needs more time to prepare for the abuses football brings upon it.

That is exactly why he will not get his extension.

Thanks to the rookie wage scale teams have become more likely to bypass older veteran players that command high salaries and just draft a young player to fill the void for much less. Yes, there is a risk that the young player's talents will not translate to the NFL. When it comes to spending $8 million a season relative to $8 million for an entire contract teams are willing to give it a shot.

There is still a chance that he is not done in San Diego. The team might just want to see him play this coming season before resigning him. If he slips, maybe they let him walk or offer him less money. If he doesn't slip he gets the pay he wants and remains with the team.

But as for the present nothing is going to happen.
