That is exactly why he will not get his extension.
Thanks to the rookie wage scale teams have become more likely to bypass older veteran players that command high salaries and just draft a young player to fill the void for much less. Yes, there is a risk that the young player's talents will not translate to the NFL. When it comes to spending $8 million a season relative to $8 million for an entire contract teams are willing to give it a shot.
There is still a chance that he is not done in San Diego. The team might just want to see him play this coming season before resigning him. If he slips, maybe they let him walk or offer him less money. If he doesn't slip he gets the pay he wants and remains with the team.
But as for the present nothing is going to happen.
