Emmit Smith Thinks Dallas Cowboys Have a Nice One-Two Punch at Running Back

Many were surprised that the Dallas Cowboys decided to stand pat with their current stable of running backs rather than pick up a stud in the draft. As nice as it can be to believe anyone with a little talent can thrive behind the offensive line the 'Boys have no one wants to test that theory (because what if its wrong?).

Former Dallas Cowboys great Emmitt Smith does not see it that way. In his mind the running back situation is just fine. In fact, he sees the team as having a pretty good one-two punch with what they have.

Darren McFadden does not get a whole lot of respect because he has not exactly been a stud the last eight seasons in Oakland. In all fairness, he was on a pretty bad team. Most running backs would not have done very well under the conditions he had to work in (poor passing game, poor offensive line, defenses keying on the run all the time).

So with a great line, a good quarterback, and a stellar passing game for once in his career he will not have to face defensive fronts loaded to stop the run.

Smith said as much when appearing on a local radio show in Dallas:
“You got to remember, he played out in Oakland. Oakland doesn’t have what the Cowboys have. And so having an offensive line and having a quarterback like Tony Romo, and wide receivers, and a system that makes some daggone sense, he can become a better running back in this system.
“And with Randle, you can have a nice one-two punch. One thing about McFadden, if he gets some of those running lanes that I saw DeMarco have last year, it’s on and popping, because he can take it to the house.”
What the Cowboys will have to worry about is McFadden's durability. He has had some injury issues in the past. During his eight seasons he has carried the ball 1038 times for 4247 yards and 25 touchdowns. Last season was the only one where he actually played in 16 games.

Fans will have to hope that Smith is right. Otherwise they could be in for a let down next season.
