Losing Tom Brady For Four Games is Actually A Good Thing for the Patriots

New England Patriots fans across the country are not very happy right about now. They think the NFL has cheated them. The million bucks, the draft picks, Tom Brady's suspension--the league dropped the hammer pretty hard. With Tom Brady out for the first four games of the year the season is going in to the tank before it even starts.

Yes, the suspension sucks, but it is not as bad as it could be and there is a silver lining.

Yes, I know it sounds strange, but if you think about it even if the team loses all four games without Brady (assuming the suspension stands) they are still going to be in good shape to win the division.

The last time another team in the AFC East finished with more than 10 wins was 2010 (the Jets with 11). Since then there has only been one team other than the Patriots to even finish the season with a wining record (Buffalo had a 9-7 record last season).

Yes, the Bills are going to be tougher on defense this season with Rex Ryan at the helm, but they are still going to struggle on offense with E.J. Manuel likely to start. The Jets have the weapons in place to win, but neither Geno Smith or Ryan Fitzpatrick are good enough to lead them to the promise land. Miami could mount a good challenge, but only if they can finally get their act together.

An 0-4 start will make it hard, but not impossible to win the division. Should Jimmy Garoppolo go 2-2 Brady will be in great shape to take the team the rest of the way. So the division is far from lost. It just might be a little tougher.

That's not the real silver lining. As much as fans must hate the thought Tom Brady's days are numbered. He is getting old and with as much as he has done during his career he could walk away now with nothing to prove (but we know he won't). New England needs to be ready for life without Brady and not just for four games.

Tom Brady's suspension gives the Patriots a chance to test drive Jimmy Garoppolo and see if he is the leader of the future or just another pretty face. If he ends up being a player great.  If not, better t find out now rather than later.

Should he play well does that mean when Brady's suspension is over the team has a quarterback controversy? Heck no. You don't sit Tom Brady if you don't have to no matter how great his back-up plays. It just means that should the day come sooner rather than later that Tom decides he's done the Patriots will not miss a beat.
