New York Giants Defense Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo Quizzes Defense on Team History

When they entered the NFL and left college behind players probably assumed that they were done with one thing--pop quizzes. You know, those annoying little surprises instructors liked to pop on the class when they thought no one was completing the reading assignments. For most teams that is true, but not for the guys playing defense for the New York Giants.

As silly as it sounds there is actually some pretty sound logic involved. He will quiz them on their assignments during different alignments and things you would expect him to, but that is not the primary reason behind his quizzes. No, he is testing their knowledge on team history.
"I like the way Spags goes about it," Giants cornerback Prince Amukamara said in a phone interview Friday. "He's not trying to make you look dumb or get your teammates to clown on you. He's just trying to keep you on your toes and keep you accountable, because that's what he expects out of us."
His logic behind doing so is pretty sound. He wants them to appreciate the history and tradition of Giants defenses from the past. Is it necessary? Absolutely not, and there are some who would probably call it a waste of time.

There are probably just as many who see the value in respecting the past while preparing for the future. How can you know where you are going if you don't know where you are from?
