Reggie Bush Willing to Do Whatever it Takes to Earn a Roster Spot With the 49ers

Reggie Bush is a good NFL running back and will probably go down as just that--good. However, when you are only "good" and 30 years old it is not easy to make the roster anymore. Everyone that comes to camp is good. The 53-great ones make the final cut.

So in order to make sure he makes himself as valuable as possible to the 49ers he asked the team to let him return punts.

When healthy he still has breakaway speed. In open territory he is dangerous and what better way to get him in open territory than on punt returns. It's not like he hasn't done it before. During his days with the Saints he returned 92 punts scoring on four of them, but only averaged 7.8 yards a return.

He returned a few for the Dolphins, but was never called upon by the Lions to return kicks.

While most players do whatever they can to avoid special teams Bush volunteered for it:
“It was my idea,” Bush said on Thursday after the 49ers wrapped up a practice at organized team activities. “I told the coaches I wanted to return punts again. And they were excited about it. We’re still working at it, still chipping away. And we look forward to being an all-around great special teams.”
There is going to be a little competition for the job though. Former rugby player turned NFL rookie Jarryd Hayne is working with the punt return team during OTAs and Bruce Ellington did not do a bad job for the team last season.
