Tennessee Titans Involved in Ticket Scalping Scandal to Keep Sell Out Streak Alive?

It has been a few years since the Tennessee Titans have put a good product on the field, but somehow the team has been able to keep its home sell out streak alive. We are talking about 16 seasons of selling out every home game. Talk about some dedicated fans, right? Maybe not.

A local news station in Nashville is working on a story that will accuse the team of working with scalpers to keep the streak alive.

According to a story run by News Channel 5 in Nashville, the team has had a deal with a professional scalper in order to make sure the sellout streak remain alive. With the fan base excited thanks to the addition of Marcus Mariota this revelation has many concerned about what seat will be available to fans.
"To me, it raises credibility questions -- do Titans fans have the ability to buy the best seats?" said veteran sportscaster George Plaster of Nashville's 102.5 The Game.
The deal helped the team avoid home games being blacked out on television, but it's easy to see that the attendance at games has been nowhere near the 69,143 that the team always claims.

So--what's the big deal? The fans at home probably appreciated the game being broadcast so it sounds like the team was doing something good. However, what the fans don't like is that the team restricts what fans can do with their tickets, but then the team can turn around and deal with scalpers if it wants to.
"They're cutting secret deals with these same guys," Chris Grimm, executive director of the Fan Freedom advocacy group that fights restrictions on fans tickets, said. "They are in bed with ticket brokers to increase their own profits. So it's not just hypocritical, it's deceptive."
If it just involved tickets to games that were not likely to get sold out this might not be as much of an issue. However, it sound s like it is happening for games against popular teams as well.

The team has since let go many of the people involved in establishing this relationship. According to the broker they were working with most of the teams in the NFL are engaged in a similar practice.

  1. Cole Rubin broker centered around this questionable deal is partners in Dynasty Sports and Entertainment with Dan Lefton. Lefton's wife Laura works for the NFL. I always say if there is smoke there is fire.
