WATCH: BYU LB Sione Takitaki Ejected For Targeting After Extremely Lame Hit

When college football started ejecting guys for targeting it was typically after someone laid someone else, but was stupid enough to lead with his head and/or make helmet to helmet contact. It made sense. The idea was to reduce the chance some players would have of getting a concussion. Fewer big hits; fewer concussions.

The refs in Friday night's BYU-UConn game applied the rule to one play where helmet to helmet contact did occur, but barely. Should he be ejected for that?

Some might look at this and say that he fell down so it had to be pretty hard. Not really. It looks like he tripped over his lineman. There could have been a little acting too (with hopes of drawing a flag).

It was a pretty stupid play by Takitaki. He came in untouched and had an open shot at the quarterback, but the QB had time to get rid of the ball. Takitaki appears to put the brakes on so he wouldn't clobber the quarterback and draw the flag, but then for some stupid reason he leans in and whacks him with his helmet.

Stupid should be penalized, but it doesn't deserve to be ejected. Maybe the play looked worse live than it does in a vine. Otherwise, come on refs. Sometimes it's okay to follow the spirit of the law rather than the letter of it.
