There is one thing that every ball carrier in football is told the first day they report to practice and every practice thereafter--protect the damn ball at all costs. Don't do anything stupid with it. Don't carry it loosely. Don't do anything that will make it easier for the opponents to strip it from you.

Holding the ball out in an attempt to gain a more favorable spot qualifies as one of those things you shouldn't do. More often than not you don't get the spot, and by reaching out with the ball you are begging a defender to knock it out of your hands--like one did here to Cowboys running back Joseph Randle:

Lucky for Randle the replay showed that the ball crossed the plane before  lost control so it was a touchdown.
