Clowney is flat out not playing. He missed most of his rookie season with injury issues and he has not played much during his sophomore season either.
Clowney played last week against Tennessee, and after the game reporters wanted to know from Watt what it was like to have him back. He answered the question, but he spent more time talking about another first round pick, Whitney Mercilus.
“It’s good. I think Whitney (Mercilus) played a heck of a game,” Watt told reporters Wednesday. “You look at what Whitney did out there, he had 3.5 sacks. If you give him the one where he got the facemask penalty, it’s 4.5. The guy is playing great football, so you have to give him credit.”
Many wondered why the Texans gave Mercilus a four year extension worth $26 million in the off-season. He hasn't exactly been blowing up the stat sheets after all. The team was happy with the improvement they've seen in him though so they decided to keep him around.
At $6.5 million a season he is not considered highly paid for linebackers (No. 32). For a guy on pace to finish the season with 11 sacks that isn't bad at all.
Okay, so maybe that estimate is a little inflated since he had so many against Tennessee, but the Texans do play the Titans again so what's to say lightning doesn't strike twice?
