Manti Te'o is Not The Only One

On Wednesday we got to see a clip from the upcoming Katie Courice interview with Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o, the victim of a fake girlfriend hoax that appears to have lasted the better part of three years.

In it we learned what we already know--that Manti lied to the world when it came to his "dead girlfriend" in an interview after he knew she was fake. Skeptics will take this as proof that he was involved in the whole scam.

I believe his excuse, and if your honest with yourself you'll have to admit he has a good argument.

If you just found out that your dead girlfriend was not dead and likely fake, but you could not be sure because your heart wanted to believe the lines you were hearing what would you do when asked about her a couple days later? You don't really know anything yet for certain. The prudent thing would be to do what he did and maintain the status quo--for now.

Hopefully on Thursday when the interview airs a lot of the questions will get cleared up. However, as the story continues to develop we find out that Manti is not the only person that has been fooled into thinking a woman he met online was real.

PFT printed a story Wednesday about a handful of players on the Washington Redskins that were also duped by a woman online.

Being public figures it is not unusual for these guys to get messages from people. Several of the Redskins at one time or another were contacted by a woman that was interested in sparking up a relationship. Whenever it progressed to the point where they were supposed to meet "she" failed to show and the players realized something was amiss.

Eventually the team posted something in the locker room warning guys that this certain online persona was fake.

Take away the humor in the story and it is not hard to imagine that these guys could by into someone being interested and starting something up online. The game takes a lot of their time either in training, watching film, in meetings, not to mention travelling to games and actually playing.

As much time as these guys have to work to get to where they are their social lives probably do suffer (well, for some of them at least). Meeting and communicating with someone online is easy and convenient.

You just have to be smart enough to realize when something is not real, right Manti?
