Carolina Panthers Linebacker Luke Kuechly Wins Defensive Rookie of the Year
The NFL was lucky this season. The rookie class was chock full of play makers on both sides of the ball which is a good thing that there is an award for offense and defense.
Robert Griffin III beat out the competition for the offensive ROY. On the defensive end the candidates were Carolina Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly, St. Louis Rams cornerback Janoris Jenkins, Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner, Green Bay Packers cornerback Casey Hayward, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Lavonte David.
And the winner is...
Luke Kuechly of the Carolina Panthers!
The young Boston College product garnered 28 of the 50 votes to easily win the award; Wagner came in a distant second with 11.
When you look at his body of work it is not hard to see why he got it. The man led the NFL--the NFL, not just rookies or the team--in tackles with 165 total tackles.
His tackling prowess comes as no surprise to his fans. In three seasons with Boston College he notched 532 tackles, 13 short of the career record of 545 held by Northwestern's Tim McGarigle--and earned in four seasons (2002-05)!
