San Francisco Giants Pitcher Yusmeiro Petit Loses Perfect Game With One Out to Go

Yusmeiro Petit has been with five major league clubs. He has been in and out of the majors throughout his career. Prior to signing with the San Franciso Giants prior to the 2012 season he was out of the league all together and playing in a Mexican league.

He has a career ERA over 5.0 and a win/loss record of 12-20, and nearly joined the ranks of baseball immortality by throwing a perfect game Friday night.

He managed to take it into the final inning, and after Chris Owings struck out and Gerardo Parra grounded out to second only Eric Chavez stood between Petit and a perfect game.

And then he had to go and hit a single to right field.

A.J. Pollock grounded out to third to give the Giants a 3-0 win over the Diamondbacks.

For Petit it is an awesome and bittersweet moment all at the same time. On one hand he has to be happy that he just pitched a complete game shutout. On the other hand he had a perfect game--something that has happened only 21 times since 1900-- going two outs into the final inning.

So does he celebrate an incredible achievement that many pitchers never accomplish in a complete game shut out or does he curse the luck that lost him a place in baseball immortality along side legends like Cy Young, Sandy Koufax, and Catfish Hunter?

I think the answer is yes.
