Another Team Tries to Take Penn State's 'Linebacker U' Nickname

If I wanted to play the devil's advocate here I could say something like "why can't they be Linebacker U East and Linebacker U West?" However, being a longtime football fan that appreciates and love the history of the game I have to say this.

There is only one Linebacker U--Penn State. Not UCLA and definitely not USC no matter what their coach says.

I definitely don't fault USC defensive line Coach Ed Orgeron for promoting his team and trying to build some pride. USC has had some tremendous football players over the years including some great linebackers. Players past and present as well as fans should be proud in what USC football players have accomplished.

However, when it comes to nicknames they might want to do more than just add the word 'real' to an already existing moniker.

Someone from Penn State--the actual and only Linebacker U--is probably preparing a rebuttal to send out. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same one they sent out back in June when UCLA tried to dub itself Linebacker U.

You gotta love that they added in the part about a meaningful degree. It tells me that they do realize that the game is still a game in spite of the money it generates, and that the kids are at Penn State for more than just football.

Stick with--and be happy with--being called 'Wide Receiver U' USC. You have a much better argument for that moniker and besides--I don't think anyone else has laid claim to it yet.
