Free Cars on the Line if Auburn Shuts Out Alabama in the Iron Bowl--and it Could Happen!

There is a story making the rounds on the internet about a pro-Auburn car dealership that is running a rather brave promotion--buy a car from November 19-29 (game day is the 30th) and if the Tigers shut out the Crimson Tide the car is free.

Sounds crazy, right? There is no way that could happen...or can it...

The deed has been seven times during the long history of the Iron Bowl, the last being in 2000 when Auburn won 9-0 (Alabama shut out the Tigers last year). So it has been done.

Last week Georgia lit up the Auburn defense like a Christmas tree for over 500 yards. Alabama has averaged close to 40 a game. Looking at those two stats it seems like winning the lottery is more likely--but there is no place where stats can be misleading like college football.

Yes, the Crimson Tide can score some points, but it is largely because they are efficient and the defense gives them plenty of  chances (No. 5 total; No. 1 scoring; No. 9 passing; No. 3 rushing). When you play a pretty easy schedule (No. 68 strength of schedule) the opposition is going to have a tough time against that kind of defense.

That means a good but not great offense (No. 42 overall; No. 60 passing; No. 28 rushing) will have plenty of opportunities to score (No. 17).

The question is whether Auburn's defense is going to be good enough to stop them.

Just looking at the defense I'd have to say no. The unit is okay against the run (No. 47)--Alabama's strong suit--and not so great against the pass (No. 100). Overall the unit allows over 400 yards a game (No. 72), but while it gives up some yards it doesn't give up a ton of points (No. 15).

So how can Auburn shut out Alabama? It will have to be with the running game (No. 3). Averaging over 300 yards a game on the ground, Auburn could eat up a lot of time if they can get the running game going (not easy of course). That will also give Alabama fewer chances to score not to mention make it harder for the Crimson Tide to get into a rhythm.

If Auburn brings its 'A' game on offense, the Tigers defense plays okay, and Alabama plays like it did last week against Mississippi State there is a chance--all be it a slim one--that it could happen.

Does that mean you should run out and buy a car from this dealer? If you are a gambling man--sure; but if you like your money and don't need a car absolutely not.
