The End is Near For the 8th Wonder of the World

When the Houston Oilers left town (1997) the end of an era was near for something that has been a part of the City of Houston since 1965--the Astrodome. The Houston Cougars had already moved to their own stadium (1997). It wasn't long before the Astros got their own home (1999). When the Texans started playing in 2002 it was in a new home as well.

It's sad to say it, but there just isn't any need for what was once known as the 8th Wonder of the World--and it looks like it is going to be destroyed.

When it opened in '65 the Astrodome was one of a kind; the first domed, air conditioned stadium ever created. Once the Oiler moved out the rest of the inhabitants left as well, and since 2009 it has been empty and not used for anything.

So what do you do with a huge landmark that no one uses?

There was some hope that it could be renovated and changed into a giant convention center, but the voters said no to the $200+ million in bonds that it would cost. That leaves just one thing--demolition.

Should the city decide to go ahead an implode it the explosion is expected to cost anywhere from $28-78 million.
