Jets Follow a Smart Decision (releasing Mark Sanchez) With a Questionable One (Signing Michael Vick)

The inevitable has finally happened. It appears that the New York Jets are going to be without the services of quarterback Mark Sanchez going in to next season. The former first round draft pick (2009; No. 5 overall) has been released by the team.

While that move was not surprising what they did to follow that up might be a little bit of one--they signed Michael Vick.

Vick is a talented quarterback and even though he is going to turn 34 he could very well have a lot of good football left in him. So in that respect it was a good signing; the fact that it was just for one season and $5 million is not bad either.

However, the team does have the supposed QB of the future on the roster in Geno Smith. What are they going to do with him?

After starting for most of last season it would be detrimental for Smith's growth to sit and hold a clipboard now. Vick has made it no secret that he wanted to go somewhere he could start, and it sounds like the Jets plan on letting Smith and Vick fight it out to see who starts.

The competition could be good for Smith, but I can't see where halting his growth and benching him can help the team. An argument could be made that he is not the QB of the future and the team wants to have options, but they have yet to really see what he can do. Last season he never had a dependable receiver; this year he'll have Eric Decker (and hopefully a draft pick).

It's never easy to predict what the Jets are going to do. Maybe they plan on actually running some wildcat with Vick (like Tim Tebow). Maybe they think Vick can tutor Smith. Maybe they think he can help them win now and they'll draft the QB of the future next season.

Only time will tell.
