Should the team go with an undrafted player who has yet to throw a pass in a regular season game (Kellen Moore) or a veteran whose strengths and faults they are well aware of (Dan Orlovsky)?

In Moore you have one of the best and most successful college football passers in recent history. Impressive? Yes--but college success often means little in the NFL.
Than there is Orlovsky. He's been primarily a back-up that has gotten a spot start here and there over the years. At times he's looked pretty sharp, but at other times--like when he ran the ball out of the back of the end zone on a roll-out--he's looked pretty comical (which explains why he's never been counted on to start).
So--who gets the nod?
The decision is one that the team will likely not make until the end of the preseason, but based off the first game the job should go to Moore. He was by far the more impressive of the two completing 11 of 13 passes for 121 yards and the only touchdown of the game (see above).
True--Moore was playing against lesser competition than Orlovsky, but the fact that he was able to make a rag tag offense (which is what all third-string offenses) are look sharp is bound to make the coaching staff take notice.
The good thing is it's only preseason so if they give him snaps in front of Orlovsky next week and he chokes it isn't going to matter.
Kellen Moore does not choke.

ReplyDeleteI was at the game last night and it was obvious kellen moore outplayed all the QB's. He is no Stafford though. Dan O should be released\traded though I know the coach is comfortable with him which means a lot to the coach.
ReplyDeleteMathew Stafford is actually a first rate back up QB. He would not be a starter on any other team. Kellen Moore just needs more time on the field. Detroit has pissed away a very talented QB letting him sit on the bench for three years. Any playing time during that period and Kellen would probably be the starter this season. Let's face it Stafford has proven that he just cannot get the job done.
ReplyDeleteThis is an intriguing comment... If Stafford has a 3 or 4 INT day maybe coach Caldwell throws in Moore to see what happens... I think it is something Ditka or Parcells would do and it's overdue for Stafford to have competition vs. guaranteed job security.... He is nearing the QB cliff but I'm still unconvinced Moore would offer more than a refined Trent Dilfer or Jim McMahon but maybe efficiency, leadership is the missing key instead of a big arm??
DeleteMoore has been in the NFL for 2 years, not 3, and I would not have wanted to see him start a game his rookie year. He looked shaky at times his rookie preseason, looked better last year, and based on last Saturday he seems to have taken another step forward this year. I think the Lions did him a favor giving him 2 years to develop, but I think he is a legitimate #2 QB who can start games and win in the NFL now. Credit Schwartz and Linehan for seeing the potential, and credit Moore for putting the opportunity to good use. The Lions won when they signed him.
DeleteWhen will the dumbasses who coach the lions realize that Stafford couldn't finish a game even if the defense fell asleep. Pretty sad to take the most dominating quarterback in NCAA history and sit him on the bench. Guess the owners of the Lions don't want a winning season.....Hmmmm....that being said, I hope they wake up and realize what Moore has to offer. The kid likes to win and he has the know how to do it.

ReplyDeleteOrlovsky has not proven anything so why not give Moore a chance? Throw him in with the 2's and see what happens.... Moore seems to prove the value of making the right decisions..... He kind of reminds me of Trent Dilfer, I think I would go with it....
ReplyDeleteI thought the pre season was to look at players and give everyone a chance to make the team and depth chart. To over look a player is a missed opportunity to develop someone that can help a team be a winner. Moore until proven not capable should be viewed as a diamond in the rough, I for one think he is ready and capable of leading the lions NOW.
