San Francisco 49ers Paying Great America to Stay Closed on Game Day

The San Francisco 49ers have a brand new and very expensive stadium that they are going to be breaking in this season, and for them to do properly they are going to need to do whatever it takes to get people to come to the games. Wining will certainly help, but that is not expected to be a problem; it hasn't the last two seasons after all.

To make sure things go well it would behoove the team to take care of the competition along with making the experience as great as it can be for fans. So it did--it'd paying the nearby amusement park Great American to stay closed on game days.

They are not trying to be petty by shutting down the competition so fans will go to the game rather than ride the rollercoaster. No, they are trying to improve the game day experience by providing fans with about 6500 parking spaces in close proximity to the stadium.

According to the SFGate the team will be paying Great America $12.3 million to stay closed during home games so fans can use the park's lot for parking.

As bad an idea as it is to build a new stadium that seats around 70,000 people without giving them a place to park this is a pretty good solution (for some of them at least). With what the stadium will charge for parking it will probably still come out ahead on the deal.
