Washington Redskins Will Probably Be Disappointed in Robert Griffin III's Trade Value

During his Heisman winning final season with the Baylor Bears Robert Griffin III was easily one of the most exciting players in college football. While there were concerns that a dual threat quarterback like him could adjust to the NFL the Redskins bet the farm to get him and in that first season it appeared to be a smart move.

Fast forward to final stretch of his third season and he's been benched and will likely be traded during the off-season. That is, if the Redskins can find a suitor.

The official word coming from the Redskins is that RG3 is still in the long term plans for the team, but rumor has it the team is saying that in order to build up his trade value. It's no secret that head coach Jay Gruden is not a fan of Griffin's so it would not be surprising if the team does get rid of him in the off-season.

That is, depending on how well Colt McCoy plays of course. If the former Longhorns legend flops the team may have no choice, but to go with Griffin one more year and hope for the best. But anyway...

Assuming the team does try to trade Griffin it will be interesting to see what the asking price is. They gave up a lot to get him (three first-round picks and a second round) so you have to wonder if they are going to try and recoup some or all of those picks.

If they do they are going to be disappointed in the lack of interest in him. Coming out of college that was considered a high price to pay, but Griffin backed it up his rookie season. However, during his second year his play was somewhat lackluster. To a degree that can be blamed on his injury, but it could also be because defenses figured him out.

Tack on another knee issue this season (albeit minor in comparison to his last one) and more lackluster play and they may have trouble getting more than a conditional middle round pick. That ay even be pushing it.

It is hard to tell what the problem is or has been with Griffin in Washington. Could it be he's lost the edge that he needed to be an effective player? Have too many knee injuries caused him to lose a step? Could it be his team sucks and he needs better support players around him? Or maybe his skill set just doesn't mesh with what Jay Gruden wants to do on offense?

When they start trying to trade him those are questions interested teams are going to wonder, and not knowing the answer may scare many teams off. If that ends up being the case it would not be surprising if the Redskins end up keeping him next year and will just let him walk once his rookie contract expires.
