How Come No One is Talking About Free Agent Quarterback Colt McCoy?

Quarterback is a position of concern for many teams this off-season and while some will look for an answer in the draft others will be looking for help via the free agent market. The free agency period officially starts Tuesday and there are already a number of guys teams are already talking about like Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett.

There is one, however, that has not been talked about much at all, but should be high on the list of anyone looking for some affordable help at quarterback--Colt McCoy.

It appeared that the former Texas Longhorns was going to be put out to pasture before he ended up getting signed to a one-year deal by the Washington Redskins last season. Thanks to an injury to Robert Griffin III and ineffective play by Kirk Cousins he ended up getting a chance to play and did rather well.

He replaced Cousins against Tennessee and led the team to its second win of the season hitting 11 of 12 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown. The following week he got the start against the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium. He didn't throw a touchdown against Dallas, but he looked absolutely masterful against the tough Cowboys defense.

Things did not go as well as the Indianapolis Colts the following week (a 49-27 loss), but McCoy looked good throwing for 392 yards and three touchdowns and completing 66 percent of his passes.

McCoy had to leave the game against the Rams due to a neck injury which was aggravated the following week against  the Giants putting an end to his season.

So overall he looked good passing the ball and running the offense, much better than Kirk Cousins, but the word is that the Redskins are going to start Griffin and are looking to Cousins to be his No. 2 even though McCoy easily outplayed him.

Washington could very well resign McCoy, but with so many teams looking for a starting quarterback it would not be surprising if he were to play the field a little. While his time in Cleveland was a bust he looked good last season; good enough to at least be in the conversation with QB needy teams.

He'll come a lot cheaper than Josh McCown did and he has a lot more upside too.
