Seattle Seahawks GM John Schneider: Hard to Watch Golden Tate Do So Well in Detroit

After progressing in each of his four seasons with the Seahawks it was a bit of a surprise to see Seattle let Golden Tate go in free agency after their Super Bowl win. The decision to do so had nothing to do with Tate. It was just an unfortunate development thanks to the business side of the game. The team needed to sign him or defensive lineman  Michael Bennett.

With the draft wide receiver heavy last year they opted to go with Bennett and let Tate walk.

Schneider talked about the decision while at the NFL's annual meetings:
"We had a tough decision to make because when Golden left, it was free agency and you're trying to hang on to a pass rusher or a receiver," he said. "As cold as it sounds, the way our college board looked, it looked like there was going to be more receivers than pass rushers, especially when you're picking 32nd."
He went on to talk about how close he had become to Golden which made it hard to see him go and hard to see him do so well for someone else:
"He's like a little brother to me," Schneider said at the NFL annual meeting. "It was very hard to lose him in free agency. I was proud of him. Personally, it's hard to watch, but you have to feel great for somebody that's getting as many balls as he's getting. He's a really talented football player."
