Miami Dolphins Were Smart to Sign Ryan Tannehill to An Extension Now

The Miami Dolphins have made a big decision. The team has decided that it wants quarterback Ryan Tannehill to be the QB of the future for the team and decided to lock his services down with a nice, hefty contract extension, a six year deal worth $96 million with $45 million guaranteed.

Many are calling it a calculated risk worth taking since his stats have improved each season. At the same time signing him now could have saved the team a cool $24 million.

Tannehill has improved each season in spite of the personnel he was working with. That's not to say he hasn't had good wide receivers to work with, but he has certainly not had great ones--but he has still managed to look pretty darn good.

The group he is going to have next year can't be called great (yet), but it is an extremely talented group with a good mix of young (Jarvis Landry, Kenny Stills, rookie Devante Parker) and veteran players (Greg Jennings, Jordan Cameron). Tack on a solid runing game headed up by Lamar Miller and rookie Jay Ajayi and the Dolphins offense is going to be a lot of fun to watch next season.

Should his learning curve continue to trend upwards and his skill players perform as hoped Tannehill is going to look like a $20 million/season man next year. So it sure is good they locked him down for just $16 million/season.
